But a bit of tape cured that and if you had a USB port at the back it obviously would be out of sight. Also, if like me it is plugged into the side of the laptop, I find the light responding to the audio signal very bright and distracting. Otherwise it tends to shoot from high to low and vice versa very quickly. The volume control buttons are a bit coarse in operation unless you press them one short press at a time, when you can then single step up/down through the discrete volume steps. Still, I only bought it for normal stereo output for which it is fine so I am only being picky. Either way, when I compared it to a standard stereo USB unit there was no difference in the sound when listened to through headphones, the only time such a thing might be noticeable.

Plugged it in to my XP laptop where it went through the usual found a device dance and I was up and running in a couple of minutes with drivers already part of XP.įor such a cheap device the sound quality is not bad at all, though I don't know what the 7.1 channel in the title can possible refer to, hype over substance? Or do they just mean that it will take 7.1 channel sound and play it back as stereo with some attempt at digital manipulation to suggest 7.1 sound. Have been using this for a few weeks now and I must say for the price it is not bad at all.

I suspect this device is being sold cheaply because it doesn't have the software bundled with it, but once you have tracked down and installed the software it is excellent! I have uploaded screen-shots of Cmedia / Xear3D software to the product description.

I use DriverGenius software to automatically detect new drivers and download them but you should also be able to find it by searching for Cmedia CM108 drivers and/or Xear 3D. needs to be separately downloaded and installed. The unit will download the generic drivers it needs to operate when you first plug it in, but the associated Cmedia / Xear3D device management software that provides control over the 7.1 effects etc. So to be clear, the device does not come with a CD containing any software. The Xear 3D software provides lots of effects functions as well as providing the option to swap left and right channels. The first point to clear up in response to reviews saying that there is no 7.1 sound or that the left and right speakers are reversed, is that YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE AND DRIVERS to enable the 7.1 functionality.

Since I have only just received the unit I can't comment on it's longevity, but device looks robust enough to last enough if handled with reasonable care. I didn't expect much given the other reviews, but have been very impressed with the device.
